Directory Isolation Mode Question [changed to]: Nero 7 and Nero 2014 same Video problem

$

Hello,

I have problems with virtualizing a video editing software Nero 7 Vision (4).

When I start the packaged App and I want to add video files I have problems to store temporary files.

I had a look at process monitor and there occured PATH NOT FOUND errors when the app tries to write to the install path C:\Nero7\Nero Vision\.

I tried to use the merged isolation mode for this directory but something goes wrong.

When you have a look at the attached screenshot you will see 3 windows. On the left side you can see that nothing is written to C:\.

In the middle you can see a file open dialogue of the app --> here the folder exists at C:\.

SandboxPath=.  but on the right you can see that %drive_c% doesn't occur at the sandbox.

I don't know whats going wrong. But I think it is a Path/Permission problem.

Please can anyone give me a hint?

Nachricht geändert durch p2p_2 I have tested further: When Nero 7 is installed on a clean Win 7 32Bit the same problem occurs. So Nero 7 is not compatible with Win 7 because Nero Vision cannot import Video files. Before adding them the application tells it is not possible or it crashs. So but I thought lets test Nero 2014. Nero Vision is now called Nero Video. Nero Video runs well on Win 7 as supposed to do. BUT: The captured version of Nero 2014 Video has the same problem as Nero 7. It cannot import video files. You can download the trial of Nero 2014 and test it.

ThinApp failed to open, find, or create Sandbox directory.

I have made a thinapp for MS Office 2007 Pulisher.  It is deployed to a test linked clone pool.  The users profiles are on a separate D: drive.  The Thinapp gets deployed properly, but when the user starts the app I get the following:

ThinApp failed to open, find, or create Sandbox directory.

Registry probe failed for c:\users\testuser\appdata\roaming\microsoft office Publisher

It seems it's assuming the user profiles are in c: and not d:

how can I change this in package.ini?

thanks all.

Thinapp IE 8 to work on a VMware view image with IE 10 or 11 installed natively

I am trying to create a thinapp for IE8 so our users can go back to IE8 if they run into compatibility issues when we upgrade to IE 10 or IE 11. So I Installed Thinapp 5.0 on a XP machine and followed the following KB. http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1026674

The thinapp I created works great on my current image with IE 8 natively installed but when I update Native IE 8 to 10 or 11 I get the following error

The instructions at 0x5e036ac3 referenced memory at 0x5e036ac3. The memory could not be written

If anyone has found a workaround or if you have virtualized IE8 with a current version of thinapp please post your instructions. Thanks

How to freeze time in a thinapp application ?

$

Hi,

So before everyone thinks I'm asking this for illegal purposes, let me explain what it's for.

We have a custom designed database program at our company, that we use to manage clients from 2012-2013.

After 2014 we switched to a different software.

Every time we have a client from 2013, and we start this software, we can't make changes because it's locked.

We tried to contact the developer for help. Not able to reach him.

So we changed our system time to 2013, and it worked!!!!

The only problem is, now all the other tasks on our systems are affected.

For example, if we save a Word document, it saves it as Document Last Edited: 2013.

How can we isolate (and freeze) the time, just for the thinapp database software?

Without having to set our windows time to 2013 ?

We tried setting it to 2013, launching the software, and setting it back. But the database software notices and switches to 2014.

We also tried, Run-As-Date by nirsoft, but it doesn't work. Error.

Thank you!

The problem happens with the Native Application that it will call Excel Application (now our excel is Thinapp)

If we activate Excel Thinapp from a Native App, it will not be able to find Excel's DLL or Binary then it will show error "cannot find Excel" However, if we use Native Excel, we will not have this problem.

Multiple ThinApp Cache folders for applications

$

Some of our Applications save their cache for each computer it is started on for a user.

For Example, we ThinApped Greenshot and this is how the ThinApp Cache folder looks like for a specific user.

(AppData/Roaming/Thinstall folder)

In this example it is Greenshot, but there are a few more applications with this behavior.

Other applications do not have this issue..

Is it a configuration error or is this a ThinApp bug??

We use ThinApp 5 (not 5.1)

Visio 2010 Thinapp issue

$

Hi,

I am packaging Visio 2010 for a client to run on Windows 7 64bit. I have tried packaging it following the various guides I have found such as:

VMware KB: Packaging guide for ThinApp 5.x and Microsoft Office 2010

ThinApp Microsoft Visio and Project 2010 while locally installed Microsoft Office 2010 | VMware ThinApp Blog - VMware Bl…

For the most part the app works. However the user's My documents directory is redirected to a network location, and Visio throws "an error (126) occurred during the action Save." whenever you try to save to that directory or one of the sub directories.

The file will save successfully either locally, or to any non-redirected network location.

The user has full control access over the folder, and can manually copy the file to the directory after successfully saving the file elsewhere.

This appears to be an issue with thinapp and the folder redirection. Locally installed Visio does not experience the same issue.

This issue is not happening to the Project 2010 thinapp that was created following the same guides.

Any suggestions?

Problems Thinapping Visio 2013 standard on Windows 7 with Office 2013 installed

Hello, I tried several solutions for thin-apping vision 2013 on our windows 7 X86 machine but none work. 1st problem I run into is when downloading the Visio 2013 package it comes without a config.xml, so I created one myself but unsure it's correct. Does someone have the right config.xml? We don't want to use KMS server for activating, we want to use the a key, it's only a one use key but it's only used for one user.

Problem we have after doing the packaging that it's still asking to activate. Tried links below:

ThinApp Microsoft Visio and Project 2010 while locally installed Microsoft Office 2010

and the pdf for 2013, but no luck.

This is the config.xml, it's in the same folder as the setup.. let me know if anything wrong in that one.. I've seen many config.xml's for the visio 2013 pro, but none for the standard, I made up the configuration product myself, no idea what to call it otherwise..

ThinApp (thinreg) & Windows 8.1 - file association tshooting

$

Good day.

Environment -  vm with OS Windows 8.1 and ThinApp version 5.1 installed.

I tried to virtualize FastStone Image Viewer and IrfanView.

I've installed, ran and configured FastStone Image Viewer after prescan. Also file associations was changed after in Windows 8.1 settings to use FSViewer for pictures and images file types (.jpg, .bmp, .png, .gif, .tif, and so on).

Postscan and build package .msi and .exe.

try to register it on vm with Win8.1 using thinreg.  I saw new application but for images still use Metro Windows App (PhotoViewer).

How to resolve it?

ThinApp legacy ERP client crashes under Windows 7 64 bit

$

I am packaging a legacy client for our legacy ERP system using ThinApp 5.1.0 in a clean Windows XP SP3 virtual machine running on top of a Windows 7 64 bit host.

  • I have packaged a single .EXE entry point.
  • Added RegistryIsolationMode=Merged to the Package.ini file

The ThinApp runs and for the most part works in the host OS Windows 7 64 bit.  There is a point when generating a report where the ThinApp client creates a .PDF file to a folder on a server, then the ThinApp crashes.

If I run the client standalone in the Windows XP virtual machine, it works.

If I run the ThinApp client in the Windows XP virtual machine, it works.

If I run the ThinApp client in the host OS Windows 7 64bit, it crashes (only when generating the .PDF).

I was thinking this may be related to a TEMP folder issue but I'm not sure.

Thoughts?

Tip – Firefox – Run multiple JRE versions simultaneously

$

This may save someone some time/frustration one day?

I am a complete n00b to ThinApp, So, this may be a no brainer to some. I have been digging around in it lately while evaluating it, and I was having an issue running multiple versions of JRE plugins at the same time in Firefox 3. This applies to the Northstar betas, and the GA 4.0 code.

Basically, I would capture a Firefox install on a clean machine, and package it in WriteCopy mode. I built the Firefox exe with OptionalAppLinks configured for a plugins folder. I then start a new capture, install a version of JRE, and then package the plugin in WriteCopy mode. When I added the java packaged to the plugins folder and launched Firefox, everything worked as expected. The java plugin was available to Firefox! We will call this “App1”.

Now, I repeated the same steps and captured another Firefox, making sure that I configured a unique Sandboxname this time though. I performed the same steps as was done previously, and captured a different version of java. As before, everything worked as expected. We will call this “App2”.

The issue came when I launched App1, and then launched App2 while App1 was still open. App2 was now using all of the settings as App1, i.e. same Java version, same session history, same firefox settings, same bookmarks etc. I deleted the sandboxes, and tried various ways of capturing and launching the packaged apps. Each version would work as expected when a clean sandbox was used, and another packaged instance of Firefox was not running. Basically, even though a unique sandbox was being created for each app, the second app would use the first apps virtual filesystem, the only items that would show up in the sandbox of App2 were the three “registry files”.

By the way, I had the same results when I packaged java with Firefox, together.

Long story short—it ended up being a Firefox configuration that allowed me to run multiple instances of Firefox at the same time, “thinstalled” using multiple JREs with the Application Linking feature. It all boils down to Firefox profiles.

Here is what I did:

•     Take a snaphot of your clean machine

•     Install Firefox, and configure it the way you want

•     Now launch firefox.exe with the “--Profilemanager”  switch

Using these steps, I was able to launch multiple instances of Firefox at the same time, each using a unique JRE that was linked to the Firefox virtual application. All with no shared history/bookmarks/settings/plugins, etc. I tested on XP and Vista. Hope this helps...

thinapp Mckesson Star Navigator

$

I have sucessfully thinapped a application called Mckesson Star Navigator which is a all purpose medical billing application used by many hospitals.  However this app requires mdb files to be downloaded from the server whenever there is a new update.  The files gets downloaded to %allusersprofile%\mckesson.   Since I don't want to include these files in the package or deal with constantly updating the package I set the isolationmode to Merged for that directory as well as the entire package.  In testing this using a cmd prompt entry point I can create directories and files in thtat directory.  When I start the app and have the server push the files, I see a zipped copy of the file gets downloaded called adt.uue which should expand to adt.mdb but it doesn't and generates an error instead " unable to create file or something".  So the initial file is getting downloaded but it's not extracting properly.  Has anybody seen this before or know of a workaround?

Changing values in a INI file

$

I have an application (Toad) that I have virtualized. There is a toad.ini file. In that file there are paths pointing to C:\Documents and Settings\_user1_\Appl...............

When that file is copied to the sandbox it retains the path pointing to C:\Documents and Settings\_user1_\Appl...............

I need it to change that path to each users APPDATA path.

How can I do that?

I hope my explenation is clear?

Thanks
