"failed to create process default activation context" For some users and not others?!

$

Hello,

We are trialing thinapp to specificaly fix an issue we are having. I'm very new to Thinapp so please bare with me if theres thing you need me to check.

I have packaged IE6 with a version of Java. I did this on a bare XP workstation with nothing but VMware tools running. the XP workstation had a full windows update before the pre-scan was performed.

The application will be run on a Server 2008 64 bit citrix farm and when i log in and run the application it works fine as it does for my test user. I published this for testing by or users and a lot of them get the error "failed to create process default activation context".

From what I have read, this is due to a file missing from the package or something missing on the host OS however I'm not sure how this can be.

Any ideas?

Has anyone Thinapped Synapse for W7?

The capture was taken on a 32bit XP machine. Synapse is working fine for XP 32 bit OS. But for W7 32 bit it will not work. I get the information bubble indicating that it is reaching the vm thinapp capture then nothing happens. I attched the bubble or notification screen.

Thanks!

ThinApp IE 8 crashing

Hello, I have been working on ThinApp-ing IE.  ThinApp IE6 and IE7 were pretty straight forward and simple.  However, when it came to IE 8, it is a whole different story.

Here are the things I did:

1. I started out with a clean Windows XP, SP3, 32bit, Workgroup, VM.

2. I did all the Express security updates, not the Optionals.

3. Installed ThinApp 4.7.2

4. Pre-Scan

5. Do a windows updates, go to Optional updates.

6. Installed IE 8 from Windows Updates.

7. Open IE 8, change the homepage, uncheck the box so it will not check and see if IE will be the default browser.

8. Close IE

9. Post-Scan, Capture, Build

10. Tested it on Windows 7, 64bit, our production base image.

11. IE 8 opens, but you can only see the outline of the IE, then it closes immediately.

I tried download the offline version of IE 8, failed.

I tried to install Java and/or Flash with the IE, failed.

I tried to update to IE7, PreScan, update to IE 8, failed.

I tried to PreScan, update to IE7, update to IE 8, failed.

I tried to leave all IE 8 setting as default, didn't open it before PostScan, failed.

Is there some sort of log I can check and see what is causing my IE8 crashing??  I did read about the protected mode, but I do not see that anywhere in Internet Options in IE8.

I used the procedure in http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1026674

I am using the latest ThinApp, I think, 4.7.2

Please help!!  Thanks!

And i have also other programs installed in the standard way. Can i link them too to the framework package?

Error creating ThinApp of SPSS, Mathmatica and Matlab

I am in the process of trying to ThinApp 3 applications and keep getting the same issue each time.  The 3 applications are IBM SPSS version 21, Mathematica 9.0.1 and Matlab 2008b.  We are using ThinApp 4.7.3.891762 on a clean image of both Windows XP and Windows 7.  Once I set up the application on the Thinapp machine and go through the process of getting it ready, I ThinApp it and move it to our server that the holds all of the ThinApp'ed applications.  My ThinApp'ed Matlab creates the following files in the Bin directory:

MATLAB R2008b.dat

MATLAB R2008b.exe

MATLAB (1).exe

javacpl (1).exe

javacpl.exe

I moved the top 3 files to the ThinApp folder on the server and get the following error as the client boots up (server name was changed in the error below to be generic):

Unable to register \\servername.server.edu\thinapp\MATLAB  (1).exe

and

Unable to register \\servername.server.edu\thinapp\MATLAB R2008b.exe

Occasionally I get the following error:

thinapp.jpg

Ideas?

I was successful at creating a ThinApp of Stata 12, so I don't think that my process has a flaw, but I can't figure out why I get this error.  We are running VMWare View Agent version 4.5.0.293049.

Thank you for any help that you can provide.

How to Keep Explorer.exe from Virtualizing

$

Hello VMware Team,

I hope this forum is still active although the good old Thinapp is not really a single package anymore.

Currently I've ran into a problem with Thinapp:

With all my, so far virtualized, packages, the explorer process is also virtualized.
How does this happen you might ask?
I virtualized Dropbox and Firefox (for example), when I double click the DropBox icon, I get a virtualized explorer.exe and not the one from my actual computer.

Now with DropBox this isn't really a problem, but with Firefox it is.
Whenever I download something with Firefox and I execute the download from within Firefox, the download will open virtualized.

If the download is an installation package for whatever software, the software will get installed into the sandbox (somehow).

What am I doing wrong? Is this default behavior?
How do I work around this?

Thanks in advance for the information!

File association (sharing different files across Thinstalled apps)

Has anyone found the most practical way to link Thinstalled applications by file association. Example: Outlook Thinstalled. You open an email with an Excel attachment, but the Excel attachment can't be read as the local machine hasn't got Excel installed. Excel is however part of my Thinstalled assigned apps.

How do you get that attachment to open with your thinstalled Excel? Or a PDF document to open with your Thinstalled Adobe reader?

I know in other app virtuallization suite for example you can use file association to get .doc, .dot or .docx to open with Word and so on. I am sure there will be something similar in Thinstall, has anyone come across this issue before?

MS SQL Server Express 2005, Cannot connect, Error: 233

Hello,

I am evaluating Thinapp to distribute our software. For this I've captured a complete working SQL Express Express 2005 on a clean Virtual PC. after I try to logon to the database using the "SQL Server Management Studio" from the build I get the following error message "A connection was successfully established with the server ... during pre-login handshake (Shared Memory Provider, error:0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe) (Microsoft SQL server, error: 233)"

Does anyone recognize this problem or can help me with this problem?

Google Chrome browser

Google's Chrome browse using a sandboxing technology which is not currently compatible with ThinApp (which also provides sandboxing)

http://dev.chromium.org/developers/design-documents/sandbox

I found you can disable Chrome's sandboxing mechanism using "--no-sandbox" command-line parameter and then it works under ThinApp. So here is a temporary solution:

1. During packaging process, after installing Google Chrome, add an extra shortcut to the startmenu that contains the Target command "Chrome.exe --no-sandbox"

2. Make sure to select this EXE as user-accessible entry point

Optionally, if you have the package already captured you can edit package.ini like this

http://Google Chrome.exe

ReadOnlyData=bin\Package.ro.tvr

Source=%Local AppData%\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe

CommandLine=%Local AppData%\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe --no-sandbox

WorkingDirectory=%Local AppData%\Google\Chrome\Application

ThinApp: Slow application performance for Office 2007?

$

Hi everyone

I'm doing some packaing with ThinApp. I'm finding that Office 2007 is slow to launch. I'm just doing a simple stopwatch test and Word takes between 15 - 20 seconds to launch to a blank document sitting in a usable state.

A local install of Office 2007 launches Word in 7 seconds consistently.

I've tried using log monitor to determine if anything is pausing but it generates log files hundereds of megabytes in size and I struggle to know what I'm looking for. The main log monitor screen shows that last write was 1 second so at first glance it doesn't seem to be stopping anywhere.

The Office 20007 dat file is about 1.2GB. Compression brings it down to about 600MB but speed is the same. This is the biggest package I've tried. Firefox and Setup Capture speeds seem a tiny bit slower but not measurable by my stopwatch method.

Can anyone offer any suggestions on how I can troubleshoot this?

Thanks

skwek

Quickbooks 2008 - can't write to file because it's already being used (by the same process?)

$

I am currently evaluating ThinApp (latest version), and ran into a major problem when getting a sequenced version of Quickbooks 8.0 Enterprise R6 and Quickbooks 2008 Pro R6 to work.

In both versions, when opening a company file from a previous version of Quickbooks (2005 in my case), it fails during the conversion process when it tries to overwrite the file. Quickbooks gives me an error saying:

"You do not have sufficient permissions to the specified folder. You must have read/write access and create/delete rights to the folder where the company file is stored."

I've made sure that the application has full rights, and I am running it under an admin account; in fact, since the conversion takes place from a backup copy, this instance of the application actually creates the original file itself. I found that when it does create the file, it does not release the handle to it, so when it later tries to overwrite it, it gets an access denied. This can be confirmed by the trace log below (as well as the relevant part of QB's own log), and the process that is actually doing the database I/O is the Quickbooks Database Manager, QBDBMgrN.exe.

The application was sequenced on a clean Server 2003 Enterprise SP2 VM with Terminal Services enabled, and I have reliably replicated the problem both on the VM itself and on two production Terminal Servers running the same configuration (although not as clean), and the problem is not present when running a regular Quickbooks install on the same VM I sequenced it on. Also, Merged or WriteCopy isolation modes make no difference - problem is there with both.

Has anyone encountered this (or a similar) problem, and if so, is there a workaround? Why would ThinApp not release the file handle?

Let me know if you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer them. I can post more detailed logs if needed. Thanks!

P.S. Looking back at QB's own log, could this be an issue with the application trying to alter file security permissions?

ThinApp: Capturing IBM iSeries Client Access (Terminal only)

$

Hi

We are trying to capture IBM iSeries Client Access to access AS400 systems (minimal, terminal emulation only), but are encountering problems.

A small summary:

  • When capturing the install the native application works fine on the system.

  • The captured & build version does not start

When starting the VMware ThinApp notify baloons are showing (near systemtray) and then the entire process is gone.

Now the fun part:

  • When excluding (aka: delete) the files in the following folders from the bubble:

%programfilesdir%\ibm\client access\emulator

%programfilesdir%\ibm\client access\shared

rebuilding and starting the application starts. Yep, the folders (& files) also exist on the native system, but the application does not need to be installed there... Just a local copy is enough.

It does not work by having the files both on the native system as well as in the bubble. It is possible to use (capture) a network install as in that case all files will be excluded from the capture, but all references are correct. For now we use a local install and a simple 'dummy' commandprompt bubble. We need to use a capture as there are depending modules that have to be loaded using applink. Otherwise complex referencing (setting paths to the correct apps) would have to be used. Now using applink the normal search paths can be used and all features off the apps are available.

I found some other threads on this on the Thinstall-forum and contacted some of the topic starters, but none had a working solution yet. There was a remark that IBM does a non-standard way of loading the DLL's, which is not (correctly) handled by ThinApp, yet.

Anyone hint to finding a solution to be able to provide a complete bubble for the terminal emulator would be appriciated.

Kind regards & thanks in advance,

Michael Baars

Tools: Things that can help

$

Hi,

I read some posts where some items failed, like starting 16 bit applications or batch files.

As a developer i made some tiny tools that i think would be handy for the community up to the point when VMware provides them as core plugin/feature.

Attached to this post you will find 3 ZIPs:

  • AppStarter
This tool allows you to assign a 'dummy' loader application (32 bit), which then loads the preconfigured (ini-file) application.

  • ThinAppPlaceholder
A placeholder when creating a .DAT-file, preventing starting another .exe-file (like CMD.exe) when renaming the DAT to EXE. (Possible security issue, as you could use the CMD or other app to change a locked down system)

  • Sample capture
Just build it and start the created links. And rename the '.dat' to '.exe' (and start it...)

I think the ini-files are self explaining. Just remember to set the correct WorkingDirectory-entry in the package.ini for the given entry (has to point where the app is located).

Have fun with it and post any comments.

"Call Shell" command problem in VBA - thinapped ms access path not recognized

$

We have an Access 97 Database that was developed on a PC with a locally installed version of Office 97

One of the functions of this database includes a button on a form that conditionally opens any one of a number of other Access databases (mdbs) depending on user input. To do this it uses the Call Shell function... e.g.

if condition = x then

call shell ("c:\program files\microsoft office\office\msaccess.exe ""path.mdb""",1)

this process runs fine on pc's with locally installed MS Office 97, but fails on pc's that run thinapped versions of Office 97.

We figure its the path to the access executable that is causing the problem, because the pc's running thinapp obviously don't have a c:\program files\microsoft...... path

what should the syntax be to launch the thinapp access executable ?

Bentley Microstation

Hello,

I am trying to capture Bentley Microstation v8 - without success.

I can convert the snapshot to an EXE and the application launches normally but when I try to access in the menu Extras -> Makro -> Projektmanager (which lists auto-loaded VB-addons) the whole application hangs. (If I add VB-addons for our CAD users to the captured files the application hangs at its Splash screen.)

I have attached the "Potential Errors" part of the trace file. As a new thinapp user I am confused where to start to look at.

Has anybody a hint for me?

Kind regards,

Google Chrome ThinApp download not working

Hi,

I have packaged Google Chrome (v1.0.154.48) successfully using the --no-sandbox option for Chrome's command line within package.ini.

Chrome runs and appears to be all working, except for the downloading of files - the download item appears correctly in the bar at the bottom of the page, however it reports no progress, and just sits on "Starting...".

I have tried packaging Chrome with Merged, WriteCopy and Full isolation levels but the problem remains...

Any ideas??

Adobe Premiere Pro CS4.exe process termination

$

Hi,

We're currently looking to deploy adobe premiere pro cs4 via thinapp. Everything works fine, but when you try to close the application the process does not terminate. So you think you've closed premiere, but in reality adobe premiere cs4.exe is still running as a process. so when you try to relaunch the application, you cannot due to the process conflict. this is also causing delays when users try to log out. I've tried numerous vb script to try and kill the process but nothing works. i was wondering if anyone else had seen this, and perhaps had a solution?

cheers,

Jon
