Very slow portable app to access a folder

Hi everyone!

I'm new in creating portable applications so this might be a newbie question.

I've created a portable app of an application which saves files on the pc. When the file is saved and displayed as completed, if i right click on the item there is an option to access the folder where the item is saved. When i do this, it takes over a minute to just open the folder.

When i try this with the installed application, it opens the folder instantly.

I am using Windows 10 Enterprise. I also tried this on the virtual machine and it still have this issue. When accessing folders through the app, it is extremely slow and sometimes it even crashes.

Anyone knows what might be the issue? What do i need to change in Package.ini to fix this?

Thanks in advance!

"failed to create process default activation context" For some users and not others?!

Hello,

We are trialing thinapp to specificaly fix an issue we are having. I'm very new to Thinapp so please bare with me if theres thing you need me to check.

I have packaged IE6 with a version of Java. I did this on a bare XP workstation with nothing but VMware tools running. the XP workstation had a full windows update before the pre-scan was performed.

The application will be run on a Server 2008 64 bit citrix farm and when i log in and run the application it works fine as it does for my test user. I published this for testing by or users and a lot of them get the error "failed to create process default activation context".

From what I have read, this is due to a file missing from the package or something missing on the host OS however I'm not sure how this can be.

Any ideas?

Outlook 2010 faulting module ntdll.dll

Hi All,

I'm having a nightmare of a time with Outlook 2010 on one of our pools with Outlook 2010 crashing out with faulting module ntdll.dll error (I have attached the full fault log from event viewer). The back story is that I successfully thinapped Office 2010 5 months a go and it's been working perfectly on all of our pools. We have recently created a new pool with a new main image for one of our sister companies, the main image is the same O/S and config but is not a direct copy of the main image on our other pools. I started streaming Office 2010 to it and have had nothing but problems with it, Outlook will crash randomly at launch or shortly after. I have tried my best to pick out any differences between the new main image and the one Office 2010 is working fine on and all appears to be the same, same Group Policy, same updates and same services running etc. I understand it's not possible for it to be exactly the same unless we do a snapshot of the main image Office 2010 is currently working on but there are subtle differences like extra print drivers and some bespoke programs added to the new image which could possibly be causing conflict. I have tried my best to remove any differences, removed any additional problems etc and still Outlook crashes.

My next course of action is to use a snapshot of the main image Office is working fine on and use that as the main image for the new pool but before I do that I just wondered anyone ever encountered this issue with Outlook 2010 and how did they go about fixing it?

VMWare vs Azure virtual machines

$

Hello Folk's,

I searched the internet but couldnt find an answer. I know that VMWare gives you a true full virtual machine with a assigned NIC card where Azure virtual machine which is connected through Remote Desktop does not do full virtual. Is full virtual the correct terminology used to describe this or am I wrong?

The reason this came up is because I have both environments to play with at work and have multiple customers with different vpn setup. I've noticed that if split tunneling disabled, I cannot use Microsoft Azure virtual machine and would have to setup on VMWare unless I use something like TeamViewer to connect into the Azure virtual machine.

One of my customer (customer A), blocks all traffic after the VPN is established. This includes RDP and HTTP, the only way for this to work is to install a virtual machine on VMware and use vSphere to connect in.

My last question, is it possible to get this one customer A working on Azure? My management team wants the IT shop to be all Microsoft so that means they dont want to use VMware anymore. I've tried using TeamViewer but after connecting to VPN (Cisco Anyconect) the connection to TeamViewer gets disconnected because it runs on 80 HTTP and 443 HTTPS. Any work around on Azure that anyone would like to share? Thanks!

An issue with ThinApp on Windows 10 1709

Hi All,

This is my first question in this community. I'm currently evaluating VMware ThinApp, version 5.2.3.

I'm trying to pack our desktop application for running it later from a CD. The final product will hold some medical data given to our customers along with a viewer to open the data.

We're planning to use ThinApp to pack our software that reads from the registry, so that it works without having to use registry keys on customer's computers.

Now, all this works very well on Windows 7. However, when I try to run the packed program on the latest Windows 10 (Fall Creators Update, build 1709) I'm getting these errors:

Error.JPG

Followed by:

Error2.JPG

I'm running the packed application from a desktop computer (not a CD, yet).

I've tried everything I could think of and I'm a bit clueless...

Does ThinApp 5.2.3 actually support Windows 10 build 1709? Or is it something else?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Application can't find .ksml after app is made portable using ThinApp

Hi!

I am having a similar problem to http://communities.vmware.com/thread/137009 and would like some help.

I used ThinApp on Halo Custom Edition and it worked but when I launch the program it says it can't find C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo Custom Edition\content\600log.ksml

I am really confused, I tried everything.. Should I change the WorkingDirectory?

I attached my Package.ini so you can have a look at it if you want.

Getting around the file path length limit

$

I'm trying to thinapp SAS (yes, I know, it's not really my idea), and the postscan works fine, but writing it out to either a network share (Win 2008 R2) or the local disk (Win 7) isn't working because of the file path length limit.

What is weird is that sometimes it stops and it's using the //?/ modifier that should allow it the extra space to write to that location. Sometimes it isn't using that prefix.

I've looked through a lot of Windows documentation, but there doesn't seem to be a simple way of setting that network share to allow the longer paths.

I also wondered if there's a way to use a Linux server running Samba as a thinapp repository. I attempted to create a share this way, but View wouldn't add it as a repository. I'm assuming that's due to an authentication issue. There doesn't seem to be any way to configure a login to the share.

This is all using Thinapp 4.7 with View 5.

Office 2013 - Outlook previewer not working

$

Wonder if anyone can help, bit of a weird one, I have successfully thinapped Office 2013 and it appears to be working fine except for one thing, the previewer in Outlook will not work, when you click on an attachment to preview it either comes up with "unable to load dll oart.dll ... access denied" or the following message "This file can't be previewed because ofan error in the Microsoft Word previewer", the access denied message has me wondering but that dll is present in the captured package in the Office15 folder.

Please see details of the thinapp:

- Office Standard 2013 32bit captured on Windows 7 vanilla 32bit, straight capture, no plugins etc

- Steaming to Window 7 64bit (not sure if that is an issue? everything I've read said it should be fine streaming Office 32bit to Windows 7 64bit)

- Using ThinApp 5.1.0

- Outlook previewer is working fine locally on the thinapp machine

- I'm only testing the previewer on other Office documents (word, excel etc)

This is a minor issue but our users will be expecting the previewer to be working.

Any ideas?

Error - Could not create directory (during package creation)

$

I'm attempting to capture an application that when it installs creates a very deep directory structure and some directories with really long names.

When I go to create the package (just after selecting the primary data container, but before I get to the part where I would typically "build") I get an error

"Could not create directory: C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware ThinApp\Captures\TIBCO Administrator 5.6.0\%drive_C%\tibco\administrator\5.6\tomcat\webapps\administrator\jsp\com\tibco\administrator\consoles\deploymentconfiguration\AddServiceToContainersDialog$ContainerContianerSoftwareCellRenderedUI "

I'm assuming the error results from the length of the directory path.  Has anyone seen this kind of error before? Any suggestions for how to get around it?

Thinapp 4.6 Office 2007 - There is not enough memory or disk space

$

Hi Guys, Im trying to Thinapp Office 2007 SP2 Enterprise on a Windows 7

64bit VM. Constantly Im getting the message 'There is not enough memory or disk

space to run Word' whenever I try to run any office app on my virtual machines.

So far I have tried the obvious, giving the VM 8gig ram and stupid amounts

of disk space, for the primary disk, persistent disk and temp disk.

I have also tried just packaging Word on its own.

I believe this error used to be caused by an issue with the normal.dot

template on machines, if this is the cause this time im not sure how to

troubleshoot it with persistent disks.

The only other package I have thin app'd so far is Firefox which is

obviously a lot smaller but works perfectly.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated because I would like to trial these apps around the office before the trial period runs out.

Trying to use ThinApp unsuccessfully

$

Hello,

We have been using XenApp for the past several years and our contract has ended with Citrix.  We are looking at using ThinApp to run our application.  I've run through the ThinApp Setup Capture multiple times and have not been able to get anything to work.  I've tried Opera as in the video examples, something simple like notepad, but nothing runs after I've created it.  Errors only.  The app I'm trying to use starts up but it doesn't load any of the config for it so it just closes.  Am I missing something obvious here?

I have tried it on Win10 and Win Server 2016.

launch MS access with runtime options

I am trying to virtualize a few older access applications we run.  These applications are complied into MDEs but use the Access 97 runtime that gets installed with the application.  I tried to thinapp one of these applications and it picks up the access executable but not the MDE file.  How can I pass an option to access.exe to open the MDE file?  From a command prompt I can just specify the name of the mde file after the access executable.  I tried editing the package.ini file and added the name of the mde file after access.exe on the source line, then I built the package.  That did not work.  Has anyone else done something like this?

Thanks

[Best Practice] VMware ThinApp 5 and Office 2013

Ever since I got my hands on ThinApp 5, I've been trying to thinapp Office 2013. I've tried it in various ways and I think I should give something back to the forum by sharing my experience.

I captured Office 2013 by following this guidebut also did some tweaking and tuning by myself.

Let's start!

  1. Extract the Microsoft Office 2013 installation files.
  2. Edit the config.xml file located in the suite.WW directory where suite is the suite of Office you are installing. i.e. for professional plus it's proplus.ww
  3. Add these lines to the bottom of the file above </ Configuration>
    • For KMS licensing activation:

      <Setting Id="KMSSERVICENAME" Value="kmsserver.domain.com"/>
      <Setting Id="AUTO_ACTIVATE" Value="1"/>

      Note: Replace kmsserver.domain.com with your KMS server name.

    • For MAK licensing activation:

      <PIDKEY Value="AAAAA-BBBBB-CCCCC-DDDDD-EEEEE"/>
      <Setting Id="AUTO_ACTIVATE" Value="1"/>
      <Setting Id="USEROPERATIONS" Value="1"/>

      Note: Replace AAAAA-BBBBB-CCCCC-DDDDD-EEEEE with your MAK information.

  4. Run the Setup Capture wizard and take a prescan.
  5. If the deployment operating systems do not all have the same version of .NET installed, capture .NET. For more information, seePackaging guide for .NET (2069188).
  6. Start the Microsoft Office 2013 setup wizard.
  7. Click Customize for the type of installation.
  8. Click Microsoft Office> Run all from My Computer or do your own customization and choose the specific tools you want to install.
  9. Click Install Now.
  10. Launch an Office component, disable auto updates, run through the welcome assistant and do any other customization.
    • For faster startup of Excel, Word and PowerPoint, do this:
      • Go into options of each application
      • Untick the option "Show the Start screen when this application starts"
    • Note: When you start an office application it will log you on with the windows account you're currently working with which in my case was the domain admin.
      This shouldn't bother you at this point as I will you show you how to get rid of this later on.
  11. Stop the OSPP service.
  12. Take a Postscan.
  13. If required, modify the Inventory name.
  14. Open the file HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.txt and edit it as shown:
    • Add to the bottom of the file:

      isolation_full HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsSearch\Preferences
      Value=PreventIndexingOutlook
      REG_DWORD=#01#00#00#00"

  15. Now, to remove the admin account open the file HKEY_CURRENT_USER.txt and edit it as shown:
    1. Search for common\identity
    2. If you want to remove the account and also prevent your users from logging in with their AD accounts, do this:
      • Delete all lines that have to do anything with HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\Identity
    3. If you just want to remove your "setup account" but keep the ability to let your users log in, do this:
      • Delete all lines and that have anything to do with your "setup account" but keep these:
        • isolation_full HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\Identity
          Value=Version
          REG_DWORD=#01#00#00#00
          Value=FederationCacheExpiration
          REG_SZ~2014-02-27T09:49:34Z#2300
        • isolation_full HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\Identity\DocToIdMapping
        • isolation_full HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\Identity\Identities
        • isolation_full HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\Identity\Profiles
      • I've attached a before and after file example for further explanation
  16. Build the project.

There's one thing though I haven't been able to work out.

Whenever I add a required applink in the file Package.ini, Office fails to start any application. Instead, a screen pops up where Office tries to install an "Office Feature" but fails to do so and then just quits.

Has anyone been able to add applinks for Office 2013?

Regards

Marius

ThinApp 5.2 released! Now supporting Windows 10

ThinApp IE8 reads native IE's plugins/addon

$

Hello Gentlemen,

I'd like to ask if anyone knows how to prevent ThinApp IE8 to see addons/plugins installed in native IE11 (ThinApp v. 5.1.16134).

I'm working on a project where end users are using legacy app which works in IE8 browser only but they are being migrated to IE11.

I'm building a ThinApp package that contains following:

- IE8

- Java

- ActiveX component

The problem I'm having is that my ThinApp package has same addons/plugins available that native IE11 has installed.

There are no addons/plugins (besides mentioned Java Helper and ActiveX) installed on a machine where I've created the ThinApp package, however when deployed to the machine with IE11, ThinApp IE8 sees all addons.

My question would be: how to prevent ThinApp IE8 package to enable those plugins and have only those which are wrapped in the ThinApp IE8 package.

I've tried all 3 isolation modes but that does not seem to resolve my problems.

I'd be glad for any feedback I can get for this topic.

Thank you and appreciate.

Tom.

What happens when my 60 day evaluation ends?

Hi, so far this product has been great. I've been having a ton of trouble getting a hold of sales for pricing, which is a bit crazy.

I am wondering though, what happens in 60 days after my evaluation expires? Currently I've just created one .exe for testing, but I was wondering if I purchase a license will I need to remake this .exe or how I tie my existing programs into a new license?

Or lets say I decide to go with a different product, will it automatically delete those old .EXEs?

or even say a few computers I have are offline only, using my PAID license to create the .exe, will it stop working after a set period of time if it can't contact the central licensing server? thank you very much if anyone has any answers regarding this
