How to use Appsync to upgrade Mozilla Firefox version

$

Hi,

Can someone please explain me the steps  for using the AppSync  utlility in ThinApp 4.6 to upgrade the Mozilla Firefox version?

I have two different versions of Mozilla Firefox (3.6.8) and (3.6.9) and I had successfully created Thinapp Package of Version Firefox 3.6.8 and deployed in production. Now I need to upgrade it to Version 3.6.9.

Primary container name of version 3.6.8 - Mozilla Firefox

Project Folder - s:\thinapp\capture\Mozilla Firefox

Questions -

-Do I need to create a new thinapp package for Version 3.6 ? I believe answer is Yes ..Should I mention the primary container name as same “Mozilla Firefox” ?

-Should I provide the same path for the project folder  for version 3.6.9 as “s:\thinapp\capture\Mozilla Firefox” ?

-Which Package.ini file should I edit now ?

-In the package.ini, how can I add the APPSYNC URL ? as my project folder is in S:\ drive (shared drive) do I need to copy it to webserver or FTP server ?

-All the desktops are installed with MSI version (3.6.8) Firefox .how will it know the path of the new upgraded package ?

I am sorry for silly questions, but I didn’t find any proper step by step process to upgrade the thinapp deployed application.

Please guide me to complete my upgrade process .

Applications dependent on system-level DLLs

I have a legacy application that is dependent on certain system32 DLLs (hardcoded API calls). My ultimate goal is to make this application OS independent (at least between XP SP2 and Vista SP1). So... I have a dependency chain as follows:

App.exe -> NETAPI32.DLL -> MSVCRT.DLL -> NTDLL.DLL -> ADVAPI32.DLL, etc. etc. (All XP-based DLLs)

With the goal being OS independency, it seems that I should include at least some of these DLLs in the virtual bubble.  I know this can be dangerous, considering the differing API calls, etc.

So I guess my question is:  has anyone else run into this problem?  My experience so far is that when I start including these system DLLs in the package, the errors come pooring out.  Is there another solution?

Thanks,

I have a program that requires a cd-rom to run.  In my folder that thinstall has created I have added %Drive_D% with all the files on the cd-rom in it. I put ##Attributes.ini in the folder with:

DirectoryIsolationMode=WriteCopy (also tried Full)

In the Package.ini I have:  VirtualDrives=Drive=c, Serial=1c71336e, Type=FIXED; Drive=d, Type=CDROM

After running build.bat when I select the exe file it created it says "Plese insert the cd into your cd-rom drive"

Am I missing something?

Thank you

Mix of virtualized and native addins for office...

In our baseline configuration, we have Office and a document management (Autonomy) client plugin installed.

When I package a plugin (for Powerpoint for example) and add an entry point for Powerpoint, everything works except I lose my native plugin. I find that odd, as I am using the native Powerpoint so shouldn't it come with it's current config?

Any insight as to what I should look for? I am running the package with a default of WriteCopy for now.

ThinApp of Java 7 Update 45

I created a thinapp of Java 7 Update 45, following the instructions from the ThinApp Blog, and the msi installs fine. I can see it in Programs and Features in Control Panel, and the About Java start menu item appears and opens showing me that it is Java 7 Update 45. Unfortunately, my browsers are not aware that it is installed, the installation is not recognized by "verify your java installation" on the java webpage nor on javatester.org. Can someone point me in the right direction to get this to work? I'm not sure what to check or change. Thank you.

Thinapp looking for subdirectory

I've created a thinapp and it appears to open correctly, but then an error appears that says that says "Warning: Import directory c:\iam\data\ cannot be found." I discovered how to edit the package.ini to point to a d:\ as a cd-rom, but I'm not sure where to set up a subdirectory like this. Thank you.

Thinapp and Explorer Shell Context Menues

I'm trying to understand if i am doing something wrong or if it's just the way it is.

I'm practicing packaging application with thinapp, i tried Microsoft Office 2007, Winrar, Acrobat Reader 9, Firefox 3.0.7, Google Chrome and Skype 4.0 with success.

There are some differences in the user experience that i would like to solve, if possible:

1) when i right click on a .zip file i have no menues for unzipping it with Winrar;

2) PDF files are not previewed in Vista, you just get the regular PDF icon on files;

3) is there a way to hide the little popup windows on the bottom right when a thinapp application is fired?

4) when opening a PDF from the web using IE or any other broser you get the choice to save or open it, but it should actually open the file in the browser instead

I realized that these issued might not be because of my mistakes but just the normal behavior of thinapped apps; i am just thinking about all the support requests i will get once i will put this into production just because things are slightly different than a regular full desktop user experience.

Thanks for your support.

ThinApp XenApp 6 Management Console

Hello

I have been having issues trying to package the Citrix XenApp 6 Managemnt Console in Thinapp.  I was using ThinApp 4.5, and just tried on ThinApp 4.6.1 that was released recently.  Neither work, but have different symptoms.  In my ThinApp 4.5 packages the mmc.exe console cannot see the virtual file system, and will error with a file not found message.  In the ThinApp 4.6.1 packages I have tried the mmc.exe (32bit version) process spawns and closes over and over again using 100% cpu until I logoff or do a "taskkill /im mmc.exe /f" to kill them all.

I have also tried copying the mmc.exe file(s) into the virtual file system and also calling the MSC via a MMC.exe command line instead of using the launch exe the consoles uses by default.  So far I am not getting anywhere.

I have seen one other poster in another forum mentioning having similar problems before with the MMC console (for something else not xenapp, in Windows 7).  so I must wonder outloud in this forum, is this a known issue with MMC plug-ins on either Windows 7 or Windows 2008r2?  Has anyone packaged the XenApp 6 console before in ThinApp?  I have packaged XenApp 5 console in Thinapp 4.5 without any issue before.

The relevant difference I assume is the platform, which is of course Windows 2008r2 (which is 64-bit).

Thanks,

Bruce

Thinapp loads but does not open

I have an application that I created a thin app for, not compressed, with an msi file. It was working fine, then I forgot about it for a few months. Now I am where I need to deploy it (it has been re-linked along with the other thinapps when I upgraded to version 4.7). All of the other apps work fine, but this one, it deploys fine but when I click on the desktop shortcut, the thinapp pop up loads, then nothing. No error message, just nothing. I saw another post with the same problem, but it referred to  capturing on WinXP and deploying on Win7. I am capturing on Win7 and deploying to Win7 also. I did check for the files that the other post said were causing the problem, but my packages did not include those files. So I am at a loss, I suppose I could recreate the app, but would prefer to understand what is causing it to not work all of a sudden.

Thank you!

Redirect file access to another folder

Is it posible to make that when virtualized app wants to access to C:\program files\program\somedir, this request gets redirected to some other path ?

I have one badly writen app which stores a lot of data in program files and this is now virtualized inside thinstall folder, but i rather see if i could move this data to some other location, outside thinstall.

Problem is that i can not change this path in aplicaion because is hard coded.

P.S. Is there a list of all events in thinapp that can be used for scripting.

Bug? mailto protocols not registering properly

$

I've built a thinapp of Thunderbird, and it works just fine... appart from one little thing. It won't automatically register as a the default mail reader. Doing the same thing with Firefox sets it as the default browser, so either there's an "option" that the capture process fails to find or there's a bug in handling the registry correctly...

For thunderbird I've added

Protocols=mailto;news;nntp;snews;Thunderbird.Url.mailto;Thunderbird.Url.news

And for firefox this reads

Protocols=FirefoxURL;ftp;http;https

Thunderbird is actually not registered with Windows XP (SP3) at all, so I can't choose it manually either... the files are there, the shortcuts are there, but Windows seem oblivious to the fact that there is any other mail reader there than OutlookExpress.

Any fix? (And I'd rather NOT have to run 3rd party tools or do registry hacks as this is supposed to work with the msi/thinapp :/)

ThinApp virtualized applications licensing

$

I've read the following:

VMware ThinApp Licensing information (1006248) | VMware KB

and I want to be sure I understand the licensing model.  The "Per End Point" option means each application that is virtualized will count towards your license cap, correct?  If I virtualize an application with the application virtualization packager, then distribute those applications to a number of endpoints, it's those applications that count towards the license cap (as opposed to the virtualization packager instance)?

If that is the case, how are the licenses enforced on endpoints that are not connected to the internet? When a virtualized application (a thinned application) is executed, does it check a license server?  What happens if it can't reach said server (as in, not connected to the internet, etc.)?

I apologize if I've confused the concepts.  Thanks in advance for the help.

Thinapp clickonce app

$

Hi

I'm working with a click once app that requires you to logon to a webpage first and then have the link on the webpage launch the app. This means I can't open the clickonce app directly, because there is session token that is passed from the website to the click once app. In a last attempt to get this to work with Horizon View application pools I'm trying to put it in a thinapp. The problem is I've captured internet explorer 10 and that works as expected, and I've tried to capture the dot net framework 4.5 as well. When  I launch the click once app , I get a message that "ClickOnce has stopped working" and the event is CLR20r3 and it references dfsvc.exe, System.Drawing, and System.ArgumentException. Has anyone seen something similar?

ScreenHunter_05 Jul. 11 08.49.jpg

If I set ChildProcessEnvironmentDefault=External  I don't get that error, but that's because its using the local dot net framework.

Help!  Has anyone successfully packaged these together.  I have tried several different ways and every time I package it together either the browser won't work at all it just hangs, or I get lots of prompts about my java being out of date.  How do I package them together where it will run the webpage I need without any prompts or error messages.

Things I have tried.

1.  Install IE 9 - Run a prescan install java and then run post scan

2.  Run a prescan - Install IE9 and java - and then post scan

3.  Install IE 9 and java then click the Internet Explorer option and then post scan.

Any which way I try it, it won't open on any box or opens and prompts.  Please help.

Thank you.

Tim
