Native Office Reinstall upon thinapp Addin launch

$

Hello All,

I have come across a strange scenario. I have Office 2010 Pro available on the native system with .Net 4.5 installed. I captured Word Addin (called More Add-in) and followed the steps mentioned in the following two posts

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2007144

Qlikview Thinapp starts Office install / repair routine when sending data to Excel

However, If i launch the virtualised Addin, the entire office suite goes for a repair as below

RepairOffice.JPG

I did try with two different approaches. With office launch prior to capturing and without office launch. Both ways, I was presented the same application repair. Attached along with is the package.ini as well. Any kind of help/pointer would be appreaciable

Applying SP2 to Offcie 2007 and using Sbmerge to update

I am attemting to update our Office 2007 package with SP2 so that I can

use sbmerge to roll the changes with the inital capture. I opened IE

via iexplore.exe entry point for the app, downloaded the SP and tried

to install it. When the install runs it fails giving an error "the detection failed this can be due to a corrupted installation database". I also tried running the update via the command entry point with the same results. Has anyone had any success applying SP2 to Office 2007 that is a thinapp?

I am at the point where I may just capture a new install with SP2, but was hoping to beable to use sbmerge and the origial package.

Disable ThinDirect redirection page

Is there a way to make the ThinDirect transparent to the user. I am using the ThinDirect so that I can use SharePoint COM objects to launch InfoPath forms in a virtualized instance of Infopath 2007. I want to disable the redirection page so as not to confuse the users. Is this possible?

Has anyone been able to create ThinApp'd version of Google Chrome?

Long ago, in the early days of ThinApp, the sandbox mode of Google Chrome causes problem with ThinApp such that Chrome plugins could never be saved to the ThinApp sandbox.

I am retrying this with ThinApp 4.7. The problem appears to have worsen. Now, many sites I visit with ThinApp'd version of Chrome will crash a frank crash of the client app with the message "Fatal Application Exit Exception Processing Message 0x400000015".

I have tried already the "--no-sandbox" toggle, but it did not help.

Is there anyway for ThinApp and Chrome sandbox to coexist so that I can create a virtualized package of Chrome using ThinApp?

Help with ThinApp'ing Skype 5.1.x for Windows 7?

I am trying to create a ThinApp build of Skype 5.1.x for use with 64-bit Windows 7.

I have tried to build it on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 32-bit. In each case, the host's microphone could not be detected. Oddly, the other inputs work, including video.

Has anyone experience this problem? I suspect that this is a problem virtualizing some audio driver, but I can't figure it out.

Licensing

I'm interested in this product but am a bit cloudy on how the licensing works.

Let's take Visio 2003 as an example. If I'm not using ThinApp (installing the program on the local disk) and need to make sure 30 PCs have Visio 2003, I would have to have 30 licenses for Visio 2003.

How does this work with ThinApp? Do I still have to have 30 Visio licenses?

Hi guys,

Does anyone know if thinstall also does Onsite support?

We have alot of issues with two applications. We already used 2 support tickets for them.

But the support is quite slow at this moment (since vmware took over )

(two applications are SAPgui with alot of plugins and ieplore 7)

Thanx in advance for your replies.

ThinApp pricing

Very disapointing to see that VM have retained the same outrageous pricing and licencing charges as Thinstall. What a good way to kill interest in application virtualisation!

It's difficult to work out who this product is aimed at; certainly not the small to medium software developer. The base price is way too high (about ten times the price of the operating system it depends upon) and the per-user-instance licence fee completely rules it out. It would be good to get a statement from VM justifying the pricing and saying who they expect to use the product.

What a shame that an excellent product that could be very widely taken up by developers has been put out of reach.

ThinApp data security questions

Securing corporate data comes up in discussions when talking about installing packaged 3rd party apps to user’s laptops and home computers.

I haven't used ThinApp yet - but I don't see anything in the documentation that addresses issue #1...

1. User data encryption?

      a. Is user data encryption on the roadmap anytime soon?  (For the files stored in the virtualized directory structure)…

      b. If so, is there anything on that roadmap for securely handling data that gets swapped through the Pagefile?

2. Has anyone successfully packaged encryption applications like TrueCrypt or PGP Desktop Storage?  (Obviously, using their file encryption capabilities - Not their disk partition encryption)

Thanks in advance,

Bruce

Deploying the app using Group Policy Preferences

I've successfully created a thinapp of Adobe Reader 10. I've assigned the AD security group in the thinapp, and also created a Group Policy Preference assigning it to the same security group. I created a test user who is assigned to this same security group, and when I log in as this user, the shortcut does not appear on the desktop as it is set up to do in the GPP. When I open Windows Explorer, I can navigate to the network share, double click on the executable, and the thinapp runs beautifully. I haven't had any success discovering why the GPP isn't sending the shortcut to the desktop. Perhaps this isn't the place to ask this as the app itself is working correctly, but I was hoping that perhaps someone else had this experience also. Thank you.

Firefox failed to open office documents

Dear VMware community,

thinapping the latest version of Firefox with additional plugins worked well, but for some reasons, the virtualized Firefox is not able to open Office documents directly. You must download the file to disk and then open it.

Firefox 3.6.12

Thinapp 4.6

Windows 7 x64

Office 2010 native installed

It doesn't matter which form of isolation I choose, the problem stays the same.

Error message:

The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Best regards,

Stephan Berger

Office 2007 file association

Hi everyone,

we are trying to thinapp Office 2007 and deploy this on Clients which have Office 2003 installed.

The file associations for Office documents should always point to Office 2003 applications.

This works if none of the Office 2007 applications is startet, but when Word 2007 for example is executed and the focus lies on it, every Word document ist opened in Word 2007.

We don't want the system to react this way. Has anybody an idea how we can solve this problem?

Thanks

Help! How to handle %AppData% created in ThinApp in DOS Batch File?

$

I am trying to write a simple DOS .bat batch file to copy certain files from a ThinApp sandbox to a backup sandbox. I do not want to copy the whole sandbox, only selected files (such as sqlitedb files).

The problem is that the ThinApp sandbox has system directories such as %AppData% which the DOS command is misintrepreting to be the user's own %AppData% directory and NOT the ThinApp's subdirectory.

Is there anyway to fix this? What switch can I use to force the DOS batch commands to not misdirect the %AppData% that is part of a sandbox directory?

DWG True View 2015 ThinApp launches with error on Zero-Client

$

Hi all,

I captured Autodesk DWG-TrueView 2015 64bit on a Win 7 x64 machine. The build was completed without any error.

However when I run the ThinApp on a Zero-Client with Win 7 x64 and net-Framework 4.5.1 on it the thinapp either won't launch, hangs or quits shortly after the start with the following error:

An Autodesk product failed to send the required value for UPITOKEN.

The error report sent to Autodesk may be incomplete.

In the Autodesk Forum I found the following thread DWG TrueView 2013 crash after loading DWG - Autodesk Community but all the proposed solutions didn't help me.

I installed Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable packages beginning with 2008 up to 2012. Neither doing so before nor after the prescan helped. The same with Net-Framework 4.5 which is in my Master-Image.

Using this recipe  Autodesk DWG TruView 2014 I successfully captured DWG TruView 2014 which is perfectly fine for now. My fear is that in a few weeks time I need the 2015 version because someone from outside sends us a document which can only be opened in the 2015 version.

Anyone successfully captured True View 2015?

VMware ThinApp is 5.0.0-1391583

VMware Horizon is 5.2.0

Thanks in advance.

Is something interfering with thinapps on this PC?

Hi,

I just came across something interesting.  Many of the apps I've Thinapped do not work on my main PC (Windows 7 Pro SP1 64bit).  I went back and checked these same apps on fresh Win7 Pro 64bit and they work great!

Where are some places I can investigate to see what is causing the problem on my main PC?

Thanks,

Brad

4.0.4 Release date: Nov 9.

The next version of ThinApp, 4.0.4, will be released on Nov 9. As with every release, we've fixed a whole bunch of application compatibility issues. The SetupCapture UI has been updated slightly. The 4.0.4 release will not formally support Windows 7, meaning you can't file Support Requests for issues that only occur on Windows 7. However, we do believe that the majority of applications will run fine on Win7 when rebuilt using 4.0.4 (a new capture is not required, just a re-run of build.bat).

Winzip unable to view contents of re-directed My Documents folder

$

Hi,

We have ThinApped WinZip 14.0 Pro version. However when we try to use WinZip to compress files in My documents, it can't see anything in My Documents folder, however there are files and folders in My Documents. We have tried using ThinApp 4.7 to ThinApp WinZip, however we still have the same issue. Can someone please contact me on how we can fix this issue.

I am attaching the pacakage.ini file for your reference and a screen shot of what empty My Document through WinZip. Also, we have re-directed My Documents folder to a network share. Even the Favourite folder does the same thing. The isolation mode on the %personal% folder is not working. The same thing happens with all our apps.

However if we do not re-direct the My Documents folders then the virtual Winzip can see contents of My Documents. We would really appreciate if someone can get back to us as soon as possible to fix the issue. we tried the same thing with ThinApp 4.6.0 and 4.6.1,it works fine. However with ThinApp 4.6.2 and 4.7 the issue persist.

Let me know if anyone needs more information.

Thanks,
Anand

IE11 - the exception unknown software exception error

$

Wondering if anyone can help, I have been having issues with thinapping IE11, I have got to the point where it's at least launching and not crashing but there is one annoying error, whenever IE11 is closed an error message will pop up "the exception unknown software exception error", it's not stopping users from using IE11 but it looks bad. I have captured IE11 on a Windows 7 x64 machine using ThinApp 5.1.1 and it's being steamed to Windows 7 x64 desktops. I have tried capturing IE11 via a Windows Update and also as a standalone install, I have also not included any add-ons or captured any other applications alongside.

Has anyone else come across the same error message?
