dll - the specified module could not be found

Hi,

Wondering if anyone can help, having issues ThinApping an application which uses C++ runtime dll's. The application in question is a calibration tester for gas detectors and isn't available for public use. The application launches fine but when you choose to edit a calibration file, which is literally just a file, you click edit and Windows Explorer launches to browse for the file, you can choose the file and then following error pops up:

Unable to load mfc80.dll - The specified module could be found

I can see the above dll within the winsxs folder so it exists, I have also tried copying the dll file to the %systemsystem% folder, when copied to the %systemsystem% folder the above error disappears but then a new error pops up:

Runtime Error!

R6034 An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly.

And at this point I'm stuck. I have read up a bit about dll's not being loaded/found and implemented some of the suggestions on this forum including:

- ThinApping the application with C++ Redistributable Package 2005 (2005 appears to the C++ package with this specific dll in it)

- Adding ExternalDLLs=mfc80.dll to the package.ini

- Copied all the dll's (not just the one dll which appears to be causing me problems) within the winsxs to the relevant %systemsystem% and %systemsystem(x64)% folders

ThinApp was done on Windows 7 x64 capture machine, using ThinApp 5.2.1 and target VDI desktop is also Windows 7 x64.

I can run the ThinApped application fine from various other Windows 7 desktops including the machine it was captured on and my own personal laptop, appears to be an issue with target VDI desktop we wish to deploy to.

Anyone else had any experience of this? Any suggestions?

ThinApp virtualized applications licensing

$

I've read the following:

VMware ThinApp Licensing information (1006248) | VMware KB

and I want to be sure I understand the licensing model.  The "Per End Point" option means each application that is virtualized will count towards your license cap, correct?  If I virtualize an application with the application virtualization packager, then distribute those applications to a number of endpoints, it's those applications that count towards the license cap (as opposed to the virtualization packager instance)?

If that is the case, how are the licenses enforced on endpoints that are not connected to the internet? When a virtualized application (a thinned application) is executed, does it check a license server?  What happens if it can't reach said server (as in, not connected to the internet, etc.)?

I apologize if I've confused the concepts.  Thanks in advance for the help.

ThinApp 4.5 Released

Just a quick reminder, that ThinApp 4.5 got released.  Here are a few quick links:

Download: http://downloads.vmware.com/d/info/desktop_downloads/vmware_thinapp/4_5

Release Notes: http://www.vmware.com/support/thinapp4/doc/releasenotes_thinapp45.html

What's New

The 4.5 release adds the following features to improve usability, performance, and updates:

  • Support for Windows Server 2008 R2, 32-bit Windows 7, and 64-bit Windows 7 operating systems.

  • ThinApp version updates to incorporate the latest features or support enhancements without rebuilding packages. The relink.exe utility updates existing packages.

  • Compression of MSI packages that uses the MSICompressionType parameter to improve the ThinApp SDK performance.

  • Reduced memory consumption and page file usage to improve startup performance. The OptimizeFor parameter works with the CompressionType parameter to customize memory performance and startup time.

  • Anonymous collection of statistics to expand the support for applications. You can use the Setup Capture wizard or the QualityReportingEnabled parameter to help VMware build support for applications and help you migrate more native applications to a virtual environment.

  • Loading of DLL files as virtual DLL files without using API functions. The ForcedVirtualLoadPaths parameter loads external system DLL files that depend on DLL files inside the package.

  • Product interface updates to improve usability and link to video and documentation information. German and Japanese versions of the ThinApp User's Guide are available.

Jonathan

Windows 10 and ThinApp's created on Windows 7

Hello,

My agency is starting to migrate to Windows 10.

All of my ThinApp's have been created on Windows 7. Most of which were made using version 5.2.1

Some of the ThinApps launch normally, but some don't launch at all...with no error message.

Does anyone know what can be causing this? and how to correct it?

Will they have to be recreated on a Windows 10 workstation?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Downloads not available with ThinApp virtualised Internet Explorer 10

I am attempting to virtualise Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 7 x64 to deploy on Windows 10 x64.

I can successfully virtualise this using ThinApp, however when using the virtualised copy on Windows 10, I am unable to download any files and also cannot access the downloads area within Internet Explorer either from the menu or using the CTRL+J keyboard shortcut.

Anybody seen this behaviour before or managed to get downloads working with ThinApp virtualised Internet Explorer?

Thanks

Thinapp 5.2.1 and 5.2.2 crashes with application - Thinapp 5.0 works fine

I recently tried to package a medical software package called MediConnect 2.8.

The Thinapp package was made with Thinapp 5.2.1.

When starting the package after the build, the application crashed with the following error:

I tried to redo the package using different settings, but to no avail.

Then I rebuild the package using the older Thinapp 5.0 and the package works fine.

I have had the same problem with Thinapp 5.2.1 in the past with the Microsoft Dynamics 2012 sofware.

Would not work at all and crashes at startup.

Today, I tried the same with the new Thinapp 5.2.2 but infortunately, the result is the same.

Does anyone have any idea why the current versions of Thinapp seem to be less stable and trouble-free than the previous ones?

MS Visio and Project 2013 on Windows 10 - License Issue

$

Hi All,

I am trying to get Visio and Project 2013 to run on Windows 10. Every time I launch it I receive an error stating "Microsoft Office can't find your license for this application. A repair attempt was unsuccessful or was cancelled. Microsoft Office will now exit".

I ThinApp'd it on a clean system, but am launching it on systems that have other Office apps installed locally.

I tried to use the TAOffice tool as stated in VMware's KB 2107369, but receive errors when trying to run it. One error states "OfficeSoftwareProtectionPlatform\OSPPSVC.exe error: The system cannot find the file specified".

I tried copying OSPPSVC.exe to the locations on Program Files and Program Files (x86), then it give me an error stating "OSPPSVC.exe is native".

I used the TAOffice tool when I ThinApp'd these on Windows 7 and it worked well.

Does anyone know how to get this working????

Many Thanks!!!

MSI package update with Appsync

I am new to thinapp environment…can someone please provide me the steps to update the MSI package with ThinApp AppSync

- How to update a MSI thinapp package which is already installed on the machine (Appsync enabled package)

- If I copy the thinapp package (DAT and entry point) the Appsysnc works fine ….but if I install the MSI package on the machine, it doesn’t update with the new version of package .

- Do I need to copy new version of MSI package to the shared location or the actual DAT and entry points files ? ( I mean ,should I add the Appsysnc URL as …….package.msi or …..package.DAT ) ?

- Do I need to do anything different for MSI package to get updated with the new version of thinapp package ?

Bug? mailto protocols not registering properly

I've built a thinapp of Thunderbird, and it works just fine... appart from one little thing. It won't automatically register as a the default mail reader. Doing the same thing with Firefox sets it as the default browser, so either there's an "option" that the capture process fails to find or there's a bug in handling the registry correctly...

For thunderbird I've added

Protocols=mailto;news;nntp;snews;Thunderbird.Url.mailto;Thunderbird.Url.news

And for firefox this reads

Protocols=FirefoxURL;ftp;http;https

Thunderbird is actually not registered with Windows XP (SP3) at all, so I can't choose it manually either... the files are there, the shortcuts are there, but Windows seem oblivious to the fact that there is any other mail reader there than OutlookExpress.

Any fix? (And I'd rather NOT have to run 3rd party tools or do registry hacks as this is supposed to work with the msi/thinapp :/)

File association for excel

Hi,

I have created a 64 bit office 2010 excel application and when trying to open an existing .xls file from physical machine through virtual xls, all the .xls files are showing as unknown file types. However I am able to open the documents.

So will this be the behavior or virtual excel should read .xls file and associate icon should show , when clicking open button. Just trying to understand the concepts.

Any help please...?

Note: In my environment, 32 bit office 2010 excel is installed natively and we have 64bit excel 2010 thinapped.

IE8 with .NET 4

We have a legacy app that we have to support for quite a bit longer that requires specifically IE8 and .NET 4. At the same time, we have a new enterprise wide application going live, that is requiring our base/standard image to be IE11 with .NET 4.5.2. We currently own AppVolumes, Citrix as possible solutions to this, but each has its own hangup. One solution we haven't dived into yet, has been utilizing ThinApp. On paper I feel like this could be the way to go, but, my experience is basically null. Can anyone speak to ThinApp's ability to virtualize this very instance, IE8 with .NET 4? Is it doable?

Thanks in advance.

ThinDirect Looping

IE11 is on my VMs as the standard browser. We still have legacy apps that need IE8, so, I managed to package it up with ThinApp using Peter Bjork's very helpful blog. However, I have run into a hiccup with ThinDirect. As a test, I entered 1 URL into ThinDirect to be repointed to my IE8 package (see screenshot #1). I go on my test VM, I open IE11, I try to go to the page, and sure enough, it starts to go to IE8 ThinApp. But then it just loops over and over again with screenshot #2. Anyone ever see this?

If I'm updating an app with a corresponding DAT file, should I leave the original EXE file in place and just rename the new APP.DAT to an APP.1 ?

Thinapp incremental updates not launching latest copy

$

We have a product called NICE reporter that uses a CODEC, a player, and Report Viewer that is bundled within 1 Thinapp.  By itself, the upgrade works just fine.  When I place the 3 "new" files (2 EXEs & 1 DAT) into the same directory as the older version and append ".1" after the filenames, they do not launch when the primary application is executed.  The original application is launched.

The new filenames are identical to the original filenames.

The Report Viewer is actually just a plugin, so I had to create a entry point and virtualize the locally installed copied of IE.  I've done the same for other applications with no issues.

  • Thinapp 5.0.1 (used this version, because that's the version that was used on the original Thinapp)
  • Windows 7 64bit
  • Created a new Sandbox for the updated version

Any help would be appreciated.
