Were virtualizing a huge complex software solution involving dotnet 3.5 sp1, Crystal Reports 2008 runtime, Ciceron, Procapita in a single exe.

Its suppose to run on a win 2000 machine but since dotnet 3.5 is included, we capture it on a clean XP machine.

There is a small EXE-file in a folder; "ga0hook.exe" with a corresponding "ga0hook.dll.LOCAL" in the same dir (%programfiles%\mmm).

When Procapita starts, dr watson throws an error saying ga0hook exited in a wrong way. I dont know what this EXE does, but we believe its printer-related.

The only way to get rid of this error-message is to include c:\windows\system32\msvcrt.dll from my winXP installmachine. Then ga0hook.exe shows up for a short while in taskmanager and then exits silently. Only problem is that when you include this file, it takes veryy long time to initialize the main program.

The description for this EXE is "Hook MFC Application". Ive read that "Global Hooks" are not supported in thniapp, is this such a case?

Ive tried everything, like including comctl32 and lots other system32-files from XP in the project as declared at the ThinApp official Blog.

Also tried ChildProcessEnvironmentException without result. Any ideas? :-/

I use thinapp 4.0.2 since the msvcrt.dll-trick doesnt seem to work in any earlier builds.

Thinapped Adobe Reader opening pdf's in a Local install of IE

We have a document management system which runs through IE which is installed onto the local machine.

I need to be able to see a PDF within the page of IE, at the moment it asks to open the file. Which does work as I have thinreg Adobe Reader and that all works fine. What i cant seem to do is get the local IE to see the ThinApped Reader.

It does work if I run the IE from within the Bin folder of Adobe Reader. I just dont know how to get them to talk, I guess its to do with the Applink command but not sure what i should be entering. Ive seen lots of questions like this but cant seem to get any of the answers to work. If someone could do a dummies guide on how to get this to work I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

I am new to thinapp environment…can someone please provide me the steps to update the MSI package with ThinApp AppSync

- How to update a MSI thinapp package which is already installed on the machine (Appsync enabled package)

- If I copy the thinapp package (DAT and entry point) the Appsysnc works fine ….but if I install the MSI package on the machine, it doesn’t update with the new version of package .

- Do I need to copy new version of MSI package to the shared location or the actual DAT and entry points files ? ( I mean ,should I add the Appsysnc URL as …….package.msi or …..package.DAT ) ?

- Do I need to do anything different for MSI package to get updated with the new version of thinapp package ?

Virtual packages and mutliple OS?

Hello,

From what I can see ThinApp is the virtual packaging solution linked to Horizon and Workspace One.

My question is: as workspace one offers the possibility of enrolling things like chromebooks, does ThinApp allow you to create virtual packages that can run on Chrome or Mac OS?

Thanks

Adobe Acrobat Pro DC ThinApp 5.0 Issues

Good afternoon.

I am experiencing difficulties getting this ThinApp to work properly.

1. When trying to add text to a PDF through the edit function, after the first character is typed I get an error: "No dictionaries were found. Your installation might be corrupted."

The text adds fine, and does not prompt again during that session. On the next session, however, it prompts again. This error did not prompt during creation testing.

2. When exporting a PDF to Word/Excel/Powerpoint, it prompts that it is installing Office Pro 2010.

The program does convert eventually but there is a minute delay. The installation prompt occurs on subsequent converts during the same session.

3. When trying to attach to an email, it prompts me for webmail or outlook. When I choose Outlook, I get an error: "an error occurred while sending mail."

We currently have Office Pro installed in the gold but not in the ThinApp vm. We use Outlook in non-cached mode.

Here are the custom changes that I have made to the ThinApp so far:

  • Installed in trial mode (no volume licensing sigh and first run prompts for sign-in/sn)
  • Captured in full format
  • Created the following folders in the project and added attributes text file to merged
    • %APPDATA%\MICROSOFT\AddIns\
    • %APPDATA%\MICROSOFT\Office\
    • %APPDATA%\MICROSOFT\Outlook\
    • %LOCAL APPDATA%\MICROSOFT\Outlook\
    • %LOCAL APPDATA%\MICROSOFT\FORMS\
    • %TEMP%\
  • Added the following lines to HKEY_CURRENT_USER.txt file
    • isolation_merged HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities
    • isolation_merged HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem
    • isolation_merged HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Excel\Security
    • isolation_merged HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Security
    • isolation_merged HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\PowerPoint\Security
    • isolation_merged HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Word\Security
  • Added the following lines to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.txt
    • isolation_merged HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Products\00002109A10090400000000000F01FEC
    • isolation_merged HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Clients
  • Modified PACKAGE.ini
    • Added the following under BUILD OPTIONS section under General Purpose Parameters subsection
      • [Build Options]
      • ;-------- General Purpose Parameters  ----------
      • VirtualizeExternalOutOfProcessCOM=0
      • ChildProcessEnvironmentExceptions=WINWORD.EXE;EXCEL.EXE;POWERPNT.EXE;OUTLOOK.EXE;MOC.EXE
      • ChildProcessEnvironmentDefault=Virtual

Any ideas on how I can eliminate these issues, or any other tips?

ThinApp'ed version of VLC

$

Hi,

I'm trying to virtualize Videolan Media Player 8.6i (latest) and I've found a weird behaviour:

I've set my Package.ini to build the following executables:

; container

http://VLC media player.bin

ReadOnlyData=bin\Package.ro.tvr

Source=%ProgramFilesDir%\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe

Icon=Null

Shortcuts=%Desktop%;%Programs%\VideoLAN

http://VLC media player.exe

Shortcut=VLC media player.bin

Source=%ProgramFilesDir%\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe

WorkingDirectory=%ProgramFilesDir%\VideoLAN\VLC

Shortcuts=%Desktop%;%Programs%\VideoLAN

...

http://cmd.exe

Shortcut=VLC media player.bin

Source=%SystemSystem%\cmd.exe

After I've built the package, if I launch "VLC media player.exe", VMWare banner shows (VLC starts to load ?) and then ... nothing ... no error message ... no crash ... no vlc.exe process in memory!

BUT,

if I launch cmd.exe (virtual one), and from there "VLC media player.exe", VLC starts and works fine!

any idea ?

Unable to load required Type Library C:\Program Files\ThinstallPlugins\scripting.dll

Hi all,

I'm a newby for ThinApp, and I'm having this problem with a package, maybe someone could help with.

One of my packages runs perfectly as it is, but I need to add a vbs script to have it do something before the application starts. However, as soon as I add ANY script to the package and rebuild, I get this error on startup of the application:

Scripting System:

Unable to load required Type Library

C:\Program Files\ThininstallPlugins\scripting.dll

Error Code=0x8007000e

I can see scripting.dll being added to the build at the end of the building process, so that's not the problem.

The same thing happens when I build the application without a script, but applink it to another application that does have a script inside. (Although this second application runs fine when run on its own, and the script executes without problem).

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Vincent

Not a valid Win32 application error

Has anyone seen this issue,

I tried capturing the Pinnacle Oracle application. It basically installs to the program files a omnis runtime. When I put this out on a share drive and open it on computer it launches just fine. The second I try to open it on any other computer it displays the following message "Pinnacle.exe is not a valid Win32 application"

also after launching it on one system the icon loses its graphic. Also If i try and open a second copy on the original PC it now says this error "Unable to open main data container"

This issue really makes streaming a issue, anybody have any ideas? Both systems are Windows XP SP3 and I receive the same error on my Windows 7 systems. Also it seems to be application specific since I can run other thin apps in the same location.

Chrome in ThinApp 4.6

I am trying to capture Google Chrome using ThinApp 4.6.

Unlike previous ThinApp version, the .exe of Chrome now runs without crashing! (yeah)

However, even when plugins mode is enable, I cannot get any of the plugins to work. Also, it refuses to install and extension, citing that it cannot create some temporary install directory.

Can someone please verify this and help?

Outlook 2010 faulting module ntdll.dll

$

Hi All,

I'm having a nightmare of a time with Outlook 2010 on one of our pools with Outlook 2010 crashing out with faulting module ntdll.dll error (I have attached the full fault log from event viewer). The back story is that I successfully thinapped Office 2010 5 months a go and it's been working perfectly on all of our pools. We have recently created a new pool with a new main image for one of our sister companies, the main image is the same O/S and config but is not a direct copy of the main image on our other pools. I started streaming Office 2010 to it and have had nothing but problems with it, Outlook will crash randomly at launch or shortly after. I have tried my best to pick out any differences between the new main image and the one Office 2010 is working fine on and all appears to be the same, same Group Policy, same updates and same services running etc. I understand it's not possible for it to be exactly the same unless we do a snapshot of the main image Office 2010 is currently working on but there are subtle differences like extra print drivers and some bespoke programs added to the new image which could possibly be causing conflict. I have tried my best to remove any differences, removed any additional problems etc and still Outlook crashes.

My next course of action is to use a snapshot of the main image Office is working fine on and use that as the main image for the new pool but before I do that I just wondered anyone ever encountered this issue with Outlook 2010 and how did they go about fixing it?

Ross

ThinApp Microsoft Office 365 Elements (Visio and Project)

Hi,

I have tried many times to thinapp visio and project (part of Microsoft office 365 click-to-run version). I have captured them on both machine that has got Office 365 click-to-run installed and with the one that had no office installed. Vision and Project are not deployed on our build image (Gold image) and this will need to be packaged so we can delopy them to the some selected users. Has anyone managed to thinapp any of Office 365 products.

After capturing, It runs only in the task manager for some few seconds and goes off with not coming up.

Many Thanks

How to install CR10 runtime on win7 64bit

$

I don't have any specific experience with Crystal Report, but I do have some experience with installing components on a 64-bit Windows environment that were intended for 32-bit Windows, so here are some general suggestions of things to try:

  • Before installing, try loosening the security privileges - I have Windows Server 2008; on this OS, they're under Start | Administrative Tools | Local Security Policy. Many old installers are thwarted by these controls. You'll want to return them to their defaults after the install.
  • Make sure that you run the installer with admin privileges (right-click; run as Administrator).
  • Examine the installation log for Crystal Report - it may indicate a failure registering a component. In one instance, I was able to get the installation working by running the command to register the failed component manually, on an administrator-privileged command line (the command was in the log).
  • If acceptable, try to create a Windows Virtual Machine running a virtual Windows XP, and try the installations there (this might be a bit tedious, due to your need for MS Office).
  • Take a look at VMWare's ThinApp - this is intended for packaging applications for administrators, but this was the solution we ended up using to shield one of our 32-bit apps from Windows 64-bit perils

Hope this helps; we struggled for awhile trying different things to get our legacy apps working on a 64-bit environment.

Outlook Thinapp

Hi,

Has anyone thinapped just Outlook 2007 - without the rest of the office suite. I am trying to thinapp just Outlook and stream it into the floating desktop pool. It seems to work fine in some pools and fails in others. The issue is with scenarios where Office 2007 is natively installed and can have slightly varying configuration in different pools.

I was hoping someone has already thinapped and hopefully documented the step-by-step process.

Thanks,

Thinstall pricing for PROGRAMMERS...

$

From the pricing info I was able to find on VMWares web site, it looks like it is priced with only corporations in mind... In all the confusing price models I found, I believe it was priced at $4995 PLUS a per machine fee??? While this may be great for large companies using this product to package apps for their users, it leaves us programmers out. What I was planning to use it for is to package up my software in a zero install package (which works great). BUT if I have to pay a fee for every copy someone downloads.... You get the idea.

Perhaps a pricing model for app developers / packagers???

Thanks!

newbie: MSI and streaming and VIEW desktops

$

I have been reading documentation, and still just don't really "get it"

If I package an application, and have a single entry point .exe file as well as an MSI file, how do I "stream" the application to end user desktops (VIEW VMs in particular, but any desktop really) without having to have a disk large enough to "install" the applications  that have been packaged?

If I use the MSI does that fully "install" the application to my target desktop? I think it is at least supposed to put down shortcuts, right? But do the shortcuts point to my network location so that the app is streamed to the desktop? Or does that only happen when I launch the app with the .exe?

I have read that VIEW (also a newbie with that) REQUIRES that one use the MSI to deliver the applications - so if the MSI installs the app to the desktop hard disk, then how does that help me keep my disk small?

What I would like to do, really is get all (or most) of my applications ThinApp packaged, and then have all users start to use the apps from the network location, and then start to deploy VIEW with the ThinApp applications being exclusively how the apps are launched. I'd like to keep my linked clone disks for win7 (the golden master copy) no bigger than maybe 25GB and still deliver all of office 2010 and 5 or 10 other verticle specific apps and the usual "reader, flash, quicktime, etc ...."

Am I chasing hot air, not really understanding something, or is what I want to do possible?
