Trying to Thin App Dragon 10.0 Medical.

Hello All,

I work for a local medical facility with several hundred physicians and PA's that use Dragon Speak in conjunction with our choice of EMR software (Centricity in a Citrix environment).  We are currently trying to Thin App this application (Dragon 10.0 Naturally Speaking, Medical) and are running into an issue:  We apparently can succesfully run the Thin App process in a virtual environment (Windows XP Pro, SP1; even on a physical device), encapsulate the program with the other associated apps: SpeechMike and CCC VRI and transfer the resulting "bin" folder from the virtual machine to any one of our servers, an external hard drive or straight to the target device.  Once the "package" is on the desired device, which all run WinXP Pro, SP1 with 2gb of RAM, we then configure the program as required: set a shortcut in the Start up programs to the speechmike.exe, configure the spech mike buttons in the speechmike.exe app.  Once the configuration is complete we can then launch Dragon 10 (sometimes it may take two attempts to launch).  If this is the first time launching on the machine we are prompted to go through the typical sound and speech quality steps for speech recognition.  Once we have completed those two steps we choose to bypass the other options that we do not need and select "Begin Dictating", shortly after that step the "Tip of the day" window will pop up.  At this point our issues begin: either just before that window pops up, or several seconds after it pops up the desktop disappears.  Dragon continues to run, we can even dictate into Dragon Pad and even save that file anywhere we choose.  We can navigate through the Dragon menus, etc.  However, and this is the second issue, we cannot launch the Task Manager to see what processes are running in the background in an attempt to determine why the desktop disappears.  We can get the resulting window from ctrl-alt-del and choose shut down-restart and get the desktop back after a reboot (I want to add that before we choose to reboot, we can close Dragon and then get the Task Manager to open, but not while Dragon is open).  Something to note:  we suspect this is caused in the Thin App process: we can succesfully install Dragon 10.0 staright from the CD's or even from install files we copied to our server off the CD's, then subsequently run the program succesfully without any incident of any kind (keeping the desktop up at all times).

In looking at the event viewer after a reboot, or even remotely from a different machine, I have found up to three or four programs crash during this episode of the desktop disappearing:  explorer.exe, ctfmon.exe, rundll32.exe and a dll related to our AV program (Trend Micro).  The faulting module that is common in each event is dd10axa.dll.TA.  Everyone of these crashed programs/dlls point back to that module as the fault. In doing a search on google anythning I can find claims it is malware which I know not to be correct (searching other machines with Dragon 9 shows this dll as part of the Nuance program).  Dragons website/KB shows absolutley nothing on this dll or Thin Apping Dragon 10.0.  This desktop crashing happens irregardless of the device we run the thin app from: WinXP, or even two Vista (Enterprise) machines, laptops, or desktop PC's.  I have also tried to either rename, or even delete the suspect dll and launch Dragon again, but it apparently reloads that dll to the temp folder in the App data folder on the local device and crashes the desktop.  During the Thin App process we have tried many different configurations/processes (keeping only the default package; checking ALL boxes in the packaging; checking only specific boxes during the packaging; so on and so forth.  Nothing seems to help).

At this point, after this lengthy description , I'm sure you all can see what we're having problems with.  Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!  We keep all drivers up to date and our Windows image is loaded only with a few apps/programs that the end users need depending on their positions.  If you need more info on our devices, etc in order to help, please ask!  I look forward to hearing some thoughts/ideas!

Thanks!

Rory
