Excel Plugin and KMS licensing

$

I am trying to ThinApp a plugin for Excel called PowerPivot. I have tried two major approaches; Excel and the plugin virtualized together in a bubble and capturing just the Plugin. In both instances I get the error: "Microsoft Office cannot verify the license for this application. A repair attempt failed or was canceled by the user. The application will now shutdown." We are using a KMS server for our MS licensing.

The bubble version had lots of issues and was huge. When I captured just the plugin it launches and I can see the tab from the plugin before the error pops up so I believe if I can get it to register its license it has a good chance of working.

My process:

I referenced this KB article: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2007144

Copy Office and PowerPivot to Desktop of clean Win7 capture machine.

Disable NIC, Install Office ProPlus 2010.

Stop OfficeSoftwareProtection service.

PRESCAN

Install PowerPivot

POSTSCAN

I tried both WriteCopy isolation and merged isolation.

Add to Package.ini:

[excel.exe]

source=%programfilesdir%\Microsoft Office\Office14\excel.exe

shortcut=PowerPivot.dat

disabled=0

In project folder: Go to %ProgramFilesDir% create "Microsoft Office" folder. Inside that folder create "Office14" folder.

BUILD

It sucks in the excel.exe from the build machine and places it in the bin folder. I feel that the excel.exe is looking in the .dat file registry to find its license so the fact that its already licensed on the image isn't registering with excel.exe. Is there something I can add to the package.ini that will tell excel.exe to look to the real registry for settings? We use a KMS server for Windows licensing. I have tried editing the config.xml file in the Office installation before installing Office on the capture machine to point specifically to our KMS server. That worked when I Thinapp'd Project and Visio standard but didn't work this time.

Environment: Windows 7 desktops linked clones with Office 2010 Pro Plus installed on the Gold image.

Plugin: PowerPivot for Excel.

Capture machine Windows 7 clean

Windows licensing is done with a KMS server.

But with ThinApp Robofrom it doesn't want to attach the toolbar.

Is it possible to attach ThinApp roboform toolbar to my portable Firefox of i should not waste my time with this?

User specific IE plugin

Hi all,

After reading some posts like

Things to Remember When Packaging Internet Explorer Plugins | VMware ThinApp Blog - VMware Blogs

I am still not sure how to use a thinapp through a natively installed IE, as our company is preparing a rollout of W7 with VMWare View and Thinapp to deliver applications to users.

We are using natively installed IE and want to TA the IE plugins.

There are users who have an IE plugin installed for a site for which they have credentials to login to, This plug in is only available for these specific users. They go to the specific site when they click from their favourites, and only use the plugin when connected to that site.

And there is one plugin which shows an application (website) specific search bar for a website, for which this user has rights to logon to. this bar is not shown to other users when they use that specific workstation on which it is installed.

I know the way to TA both kind of plugins, but do not know how to load them when the native installed IE is started and when the website from the favorites is clicked the plugin is loaded and can be used.

We do not wish to thinapp IE or any other browser.

In other words: How can I tell when a local IE is started to load a TA with the proper plugin for a specific user when they click the website from their favourites menu?

TIA, regards

Virtualized Acrobat 9 Pro ...

Hi all,

I tried to virtualized Acrobat 9 Pro (not Acrobat 9 Reader) and ran into some problems like:

1. The "deactivate" button from Help menu is not listed - so you cannot deactivate the licesne - not sure why after the application virtualized it still know and detected how many times the software ran on more than two different workstation. After two ran on different workstation it will pop-up a warning message?

2. Also, when I launched Acrobat 9 Pro (virtualized) and try to create a PDF file from Word document. Do I need to link (Application link) it to Word? Or, is there a better way to handle plug-ins for Acrobat.

Also, I am looking for a guide or best practice for virtualize Acrobat. Thanks.

Cheers,

Thinapp + local installed program

New to ThinApp but heres what I got so far:

We have a rather large program installed on numerous PC's that needs to be updated every week or so.  Within this program, it sends parameters to a locally installed scanning program which in turns uses a locally installed scanner driver.  I've got our large program thinapped to run off a network share, lauch the scanning program, and work fine; but when you try lauching the scanning utility for the 2nd time (never closing the thinapp) the locally installed scanning program errors citing it can't load the scanner driver.  I did a merged isolation with sandbox on the local user PC.  In the sandbox, thinapp brings files for both the scanning program and scanner driver in.

It seems that once thinapp brings the files into the sandbox and uses them once, they no longer work again unless I close the thinapp, delete the sandbox, and re-launch the thinapp.  I truly believe thinapp is where we need go as far as application support but won't get it in the budget till this one works.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Started my Trial of 4.5. I am trying to thinapp autocad 2010. After the postscan I select only the Acad.exe. I have tried selecting both User profile and USB packaging types. Neither of which work when I try building it. When it tries to build it, it fails and says " ACAD.exe is not a valid executable." Not sure what the heck is going on as I am not too familiar with thinapp. Any help would be appreciated.

ThinApp iTunes 9.2.1.5 problem

$

A little help if you please...

I am trying to make iTunes 9.2.1.5 portable. I have a fresh install of windows xp in a vmware image. I do a prescan, install iTunes. I use the options I believe are correct. I then follow the instructions that others have listed in regards to iTunes (thanks to DelphiOne and all the others ). I edit the registry, copy over the modified dll and then build the project.

At that point I run the app on the virtualized windows and get an error message  "itunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing. Please reinstall iTunes".

I have tried the different options in the thinapp wizard but have yet to find the right combination to make the application run at all. I keep getting the error message I listed above.

If anyone could list the options they used to get the app to run I would be very grateful. For instance, what to use as entry points (i tried selecting all and also selecting just iTunes), which isolation mode to use (tried both settings),  what to use as the primary data container and so on.

Thanks to all in advance,

cheers.

2)on x64 systems (Vista and W7) I can not run some exe files when I'm double clicking on it. For example double click on vjredist64.exe (microsoft Visual J# 2.0 Redistributable Package - SE Setup) crash with the next error:

"Error creating process <C:\Users\Admin\AppData\Local\Temp\IXP000.tmp\install.exe>. Reason: The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect."

If I'm trying to run the exe file with "Run as Administrator" option, it gives the next error: "This operation returned because the timeout period expired."

I used ThinApp vs. 4.7.1 and 4.7.2. Also I packaged Total Commander v7.57 and v8.0 (both in trial mode). The behavior is the same as I described earlier.

Have you tried to package Total Commander? Or have someone any idea how to solve these problems?

Thank you.

Native Office 2010 and Thinapped Adobe Acrobat XI Pro

$

All right. Being creative here and so far pretty much everything works. Here's the layout of things:

VMware Horizon View 5.2

ThinApp 4.7.3

Windows 7 x 64 inside View

Office 2010 natively installed, with some native applications that are plugins to office.

In order to get native plugins and virtualized plugins to work, I created thinapped entry points for the native office installation and added the optional appsync path to my addins. This works perfectly. I get both the native plugin and the virtualized ones, cohabiting harmoniously

The issue:

Adobe Acrobat Pro integrates just as well as the rest of my other plugins, however it causes Office to do a self-repair everytime it starts.

It seems to be unable to read the following registry key and to load the MSCOMCTL.OCX file.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components\00965022248C1D110ADD000A9C502477

This key exists on the physical machine but isn't visible in the thinapped environment.

The Office 2010 Entry Points package is only the package.ini file, with 4 entry points defined as well as isolation modes set to merged for both the directoryisolationmode and the registryisolationmode.

Attempts at resolution:

- I added the following in my Acrobat package (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.TXT) - didn't work.

isolation_merged HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components\00965022248C1D110ADD000A9C502477

- I added the following in my Acrobat package (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.TXT) - didn't work.

isolation_merged HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18

- I added the MSCOMCTL.OCX file to the Acrobat %systemsystem% folder - didn't work.

Any help would be appreciated!

Acrobat X Pro ThinApp possible?

$

I have successfully thinapped acrobat x pro and the virtual application launches perfectly fine. The problem I'm running into is tripping the prompt to enter the install key or use it in trial mode. The real installation is installed with a valid installation key and is activated. But that activation either doesn't carry over or is not captured during the thinapp process. Adobe obviously has changed their activation process from acrobat 9 to acrobat 10. I was wanting to see if any one has tried thinapping this application yet or has any advice.

Office 2003 Pro - Cannot print from Powerpoint

$

Hi - Not sure what I'm doing wrong here...

Using ThinApp 4.0.0-2200 to capture Office 2003 Pro via a clean XP Pro VM

Captures fine, builds fine & works a treat EXCEPT - trying to print from Powerpoint generates a "No printers are installed. To install a printer : ...." (see attached screengrab)

All the other Office 2003 programs (Access, Excel, Publisher & Word) can print fine using locally installed printers.

I've tried re-capturing via a clean 2000 Pro VM, with the same result.

I've also sucessfully captured Office 97 Pro and Office 2000 Pro in exactly the same way and they all work perfectly. Whats different about printing from Powerpoint 2003?

Any suggestions.

cheers

Dominic

Your Runtime License has Expired

$

I have a customer who downloaded and installed the 60-day Trial of ThinApp... by the 45th day or so, she liked it so much that she had

already virtualized about 3 dozen or so Apps... The License file was, of course, the Trial license...

Well, she just purchased and received her ThinApp "real" License, but not before the Trial one ran out...  So now, every time she launches

a ThinApp'd app, she immediately gets a small screen that says, "License Error:  Your Runtime License Has Expired"... She can only

click "OK", and that's it... Nothing else...

Where can I tell her to go, to input the new Production license file that she has just purchased, so that all her Apps "work" again?

Is she just hosed?  Will she have to re-virtualize all those Apps again?

Thanks.
